So, what is your BMI?

There is a lot of buzz out there about what constitutes a healthy weight. Many of you have a preconceived “number” in your head of what a healthy weight should be for you. Often times, that number can be overestimated or underestimated, and the emotion consequences can seriously “weigh” you down. Weight fluctuations are common and can happen on a daily basis based on a variety of factors. Therefore, daily weight is not a reliable indicator of true health. The scale can drive you nuts  if you become a hostage to the number it displays. A better indicator of overall health is a Body Mass Index (BMI). Let’s take a look at what that is exactly.

What is a BMI ?

A BMI (body mass index) is a useful measure of overweight and obesity. It is calculated from your height and weight. BMI is an estimate of body fat and a good gauge of your risk for diseases that can occur with more body fat.

Although BMI can be used for most men and women, it does have some limits:

  • It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build.
  • It may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle.

How do I know if my BMI is in a health range?

The standard weight status categories associated with BMI ranges for adults are shown in the following table.

BMI

Below 18.5

Underweight

Normal or Healthy Weight

There are many online calculators and apps to accurately assess your BMI. It is important to stress  that there are many risk factors associated with an unhealthy BMI. If you find yourself falling into an unhealthy range it is important to discuss your results with medical professionals.  Obesity has been linked to many chronic illnesses like, heart disease,  type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, depression and arthritis to name a few. The good news here is, that unlike other diseases, many of these conditions can be reversed and prevented with lifestyle and behavior changes.
